Dr. Andy Massey
Chairman, Medical Committee & Medical Director – FIFA
Dr Andy Massey is the Chairman of the Medical Committee and Medical Director at FIFA, the governing body of world football. He joined FIFA in 2020, leading the global medical department and overseeing medical infrastructure across all levels of the game, from the FIFA World Cups to grassroots football.
Prior to FIFA, Dr Massey served as Head of Medical Services at Liverpool FC, where he led the medical, physiotherapy and sports science departments. He joined the club in 2013 and was part of the backroom staff during Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League and Premier League successes. Earlier in his career, he was the National Team Doctor for the Irish Football Association from 2008 to 2013.
He began his career as a professional footballer while undertaking academic studies in physiotherapy and sports science. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy, a Master’s in Sports Physiotherapy, qualifications in strength and conditioning, and later completed his medical training in the UK.
He has earned an MSc in Sports Medicine and an MSc in Medical Ultrasound, and is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (Ireland). He is also a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners (UK) and is currently studying for a Professional Doctorate in Sport and Exercise Science.
Madeleine Pape
Madeleine Pape (MS, PhD, OLY) is a sociologist and Ambizione grantholder of the Swiss National Science Foundation and Associate Professor of Regulation and Integrity in Sport at the University of Lausanne’s Institute of Sport Sciences (beginning February 2027). Following her career as an Olympic athlete (Australia, Athletics, 800m), Dr Pape obtained her PhD in Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr Pape’s research encompasses the regulation of eligibility in women’s sport, gender inequality in sports governance, and the study of sex and gender in biomedical and sports science research. Madeleine has published in leading journals including Cell, Biology of Sex Differences, British Journal of Sports Medicine, Social Studies of Science, Gender & Society, Body & Society, and Health Sociological Review. From 2022-2025, Dr Pape worked with the International Olympic Committee to implement the IOC Framework on Fairness, Inclusion and Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity and Sex Variations.
Dr. Margo Mountjoy
Dr. Mountjoy (MD, PhD) is a Clinical Professor at McMaster University, CAN. She is a Clinician Scientist, having worked for several International Sports organizations including the IOC, IGF (golf), World Rugby FIFA, World Netball, ASOIF, the ITA, and WADA. Her areas of clinical expertise and research interests are in the field of female athlete health, safeguarding in sport, and mental health. She is an active advocate for the promotion of holistic athlete-centred health care.
Evert Verhagen
Evert Verhagen (1976) is a Human Movement Scientist and Epidemiologist with extensive sports medicine and injury prevention expertise. He is a senior research expert in the Medical and Anti-Doping Department of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), developing and leading their research programme on player health and well-being. In addition to this role, he is a professor at the Department of Public and Occupational Health at Amsterdam UMC, Netherlands, where he co-chairs the Dutch IOC Research Centre. His work focuses on preventing sports and physical activity injuries, with particular emphasis on monitoring, cost-effectiveness, and implementation strategies.
Dr Borja Muniz-Pardos
Dr Borja Muniz-Pardos is a Senior Research Fellow and Lecturer at the FIMS (International Federation of Sports Medicine) Collaborating Centre of Sports Medicine at the University of Zaragoza (Spain). His research focuses on the study and implementation of emerging technologies in elite sport. His work combines sports medicine, physiology and wearable technology to improve decision-making in high-performance environments. He has authored more than 55 peer-reviewed scientific publications and collaborates with international organisations on innovation in sports medicine and exercise performance.

As we all know, sport includes all forms of human movement aimed at expressing, maintaining, or improving physical fitness and performance, as well as mental well-being. Sport also contributes to the creation or enhancement of social relationships during leisure time, competition, improved health maintenance, and the prevention and treatment of various diseases. Sports medicine makes a fundamental contribution to these goals, as its focus is not limited to professional athletes but is also essential for amateur athletes and those seeking to manage chronic conditions through exercise, thus promoting a healthy and conscious lifestyle for all. Sports medicine contribution is also crucial in addressing specific threats to the integrity of sports competition, including all forms of traditional doping, issues of technological equity, and the integration of transgender and intersex athletes in elite sport.
On behalf of FIMS, I would like to thank the Chilean authorities for supporting the Congress and for hosting the International Sports Medicine Community. A special thank to the Sociedad Chilena de Medicina del Deporte which has demonstrated to be a very active FIMS Member National Associations, focusing its interest in promoting excellence both in scientific and educational aspects, and strengthening also the FIMS leading role thanks to its important leaders.
